Se’atat, the Horologium

The Horologium was composed by the distinguished 15th-century scholar, Abba Giyorgis of Gascha. Over time, it was gradually enriched by additional hymns and prayers. In larger churches, it is customary for monks, priests, and deacons to conduct the Se’atat in the northern part of the ambulatory while the Debteras are conducting a different service.

The book of Se’atat contains the great public prayers of the Church, not necessarily said in public but always offered in the name of the church. It is recited at specified hours in churches, monasteries, and outdoor settings. The book is divided into seven parts known as canonical hours, each recited at its designated time: Night, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. The first hour is Matins (Morning Office) followed by Lauds; then comes Prime at sunrise, Terce at the third hour, Sext at noon, None at three o’clock, Vespers in the evening, and finally Compline.

The office consists of psalms, discourses by church fathers, hymns, and prayers. Deacons lead the night service chanting the Se’atat until dawn. While there were arrangements where a debtera recited specific hours in exchange for church landholding rights, priests and deacons are not obligated to recite the office.

Audio and Text Synchronization (Future Pro Update)
